David Jenkins, Midway's President, was the author of "Tips and Tricks with dBASE III". He has this to say about legacy (i.e. DOS) programs:

Where do old DOS programs go?

Foxpro, FoxBase, Clipper and dBASE for Dos applications are the orphans of the programming world. Many of them were remarkable work horses in their time.

There's good news and bad news. Most often, your DOS programs are:
bulletstill functional
bulletstill important to their users
bulletout of date

You typically have 2 choices:

bulletCarry On Slogging Away With An Old Technology

This is not absolutely impossible but it gets harder each year as technology moves along (for example, you can't use Windows printers).

bulletRewrite the program (typically in Access or Visual FoxPro)

This is a tough "bite" the bullet situation. It will cost you a major rewrite and you may not need any new features in your software. Yet, if you don't upgrade, you run the risk that one day nothing will work!!!
