When Excel grows beyond the "handmade" stage!

Even though business data resides in professional databases, Excel is the most common language of data and calculations. It is used and understood by more people than any other format.

Someone who would shrink from an SQL database or an Access table, nevertheless knows how to understand a spreadsheet.

Many projects start life as a straight forward Excel spreadsheet. Eventually they can become too big or too unwieldy to handle in Excel. Scale is usually the issue -- what was appropriate and handy at first grows into something that gets harder and harder and the cost/benefit ratio goes down.

Some tasks can be automated so that e.g. data can be "cut and sliced" to fit the user. Reports can be generated.
